Broome, is located on Roebuck Bay approximately 2200 km north of Perth and is classified as the "Southern Gateway To The Kimberley's" and the perfect base camp to explore the Kimberley region

Broome's lifestyle is rather laid back and is reflected in the residents easy nature. Due to the previous history of Pearling which goes back decades and decades the main population consists of a mix Asian and old colony influences, which creates a great cosmopolitan feel to the town.

Broome is an important port for the Pearl Industry but Broome tourism has taken over due to spectacular beachside resorts such as the "Cable Beach Club" at the famous "Cable Beach"

There are many attractions to Broome ranging from the 80 year old open air Sun Pictures Cinema, the Japanese cemetery, Broome Bird Observatory on Roebuck Bay, Gantheaume Points dinosaur footprints and the Chinatown area. Fishing and boat charters are available as well and there are a stack of restaurants with choices of food to suit any one.

Broome is generally very hot in the summer months and very wet due to the monsoon rains further north. The best time to visit is in our winter months and this is reflected in the visitors that arrive from May to November and the small amounts of rain.

Broome has played a central role in the history of Western Australia since the 1880s when rich pearl beds were discovered in the coastal waters.  As the protected cove of Roebuck Bay attracted increasing numbers of pearlers and their luggers, the port town of Broome was established.

"The Pearl Divers were the Kings of the pearling industry. Daily they risked their lives in the dark ocean depths and took all the risks of obtaining the precious shell.  The top divers were accorded respect, even by Europeans.  A good diver could make a fortune in a few seasons, but it was said that if he had not become rich after his fifth season, his prospects were likely to be paralysis or a plot in the Broome graveyard.

The No. 1 diver was the most important man on the lugger.  He located and picked up the shell and gave signals to position the boat above.  He was the one who was risked his life every day by donning the bulky diving suit, diver's helmet and lead shoes to descend to the ocean floor to gather the precious shell.   Although the invention of the dress diving suit by John Deane, of Whitstable, England in 1820 allowed divers to dive deeper and stay down longer, it did not reduce their risk of contracting the bends.

The history of Broome is a real-life swashbuckling tale of men seeking their fortunes in a harsh and unforgiving environment. In fact, the history of Broome and the pearling industry are virtually one and the same, with the town's prosperity ebbing and flowing with the fortunes of the pearlers.  This adventurous and often tragic history fills volumes of books, and several popular novels have capitalised on Broome's historical charm.
